Canadian political science scholar Daniel Douek is working on a book about Peter Tosh’s music and Pan-African activism, according to an October 27 Jamaica Gleaner interview. He discussed the project during a visit for the fiftieth-anniversary celebration of Legalize It in Kingston.
Douek described the working title as Here Comes the Judge: Peter Tosh a Pan-African Revolutionary. His research examines Jamaican history, resistance and solidarity through Tosh’s songs and public positions, including his opposition to apartheid.
He told the newspaper that he had spoken with musicians who worked and toured with Tosh, as well as figures close to the artiste. The feature describes an ongoing research and writing project, rather than a published book with a confirmed release date.
The project places reggae within a wider conversation about how Caribbean music travelled alongside liberation movements and influenced listeners beyond the region.
