Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley has been named among the University of the West Indies' 2026 honorary degree recipients.

The Grammy-winning reggae artist is scheduled to receive an honorary Doctor of Letters during graduation ceremonies at the Mona campus in November, recognizing his contribution to culture and his reach as a Caribbean artist.

The honor adds an academic recognition to a career that has carried reggae across multiple generations and audiences. From “Halfway Tree” through “Welcome to Jamrock” and beyond, Marley's work has consistently crossed reggae, dancehall and hip-hop spaces while remaining connected to Jamaican culture.

The recognition also reflects the growing place of popular music and cultural work within the region's institutions, where artists are increasingly acknowledged for influence that extends beyond entertainment.
