The Archives of Ontario has opened “Pan Tones: The Colourful History of Steelpan,” an exhibition documenting the instrument’s Trinidad and Tobago origins and its role in Ontario’s Caribbean community.
The exhibition draws on archival photographs, newspaper material, educational resources and community contributions to follow steelpan’s development and migration.
The project was developed with the Trinidad and Tobago Consulate General, community contributors and Pan Trinbago, linking the instrument’s Caribbean history to Toronto’s long-running carnival and pan traditions.
The onsite exhibition runs from September 2026 through spring 2027 at the Archives of Ontario in Toronto.
